The IDI Bike and Walking Patrol began in May 1995 to augment IPD's presence on Downtown streets and sidewalks. Staffed by more than 50 off-duty IPD, IUPUI, State Capitol Police, Indianapolis Housing Police, Marion County Sheriff's Department, and other Marion County law enforcement agencies, the patrol provides a customer-friendly and visible police presence that enhances consumer confidence in public safety. The officers deter crime and act as Downtown ambassadors by providing assistance to visitors.
In 2006, IDI officers:
- logged 7,184 patrol hours
- made 9,094 patrols of garages and lots
- made 4,128 security partner contacts
- made 16,879 visitor contacts
- assisted IMPD with 493 police runs and 22 arrests
