Many ways to celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
January 21 is a day set aside to commemorate a leader who forever impacted human rights in our society. Celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Downtown with several FREE events. The Indiana Historical Society hosts a FREE Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. Both The Children's Museum of Indianapolis and the Indianapolis Museum of Art are celebrating the day with FREE admission to the museums. The Madame Walker Theatre Center will hold a Freedom Walk on the Avenue at noon to observe the holiday. Following the walk, Walker Theatre hosts a FREE Keep the Dream Alive celebration at 12:15 p.m. The Indiana State Museum pays tribute to Dr. King by hosting a MLK Day Celebration from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. with FREE admission with the donation of a canned food item. For a special MLK Day treat, catch the Harlem Globetrotters at Conseco Fieldhouse at 2 p.m.
For the sports lovers
The Indiana Pacers hit the hardwood of Conseco Fieldhouse numerous times in January. Don't miss the fun entertainment and give-aways, including a one of-a-kind Pacers knit scarf on Jan. 16. With a playoff birth clinched, be sure to keep up on where the Indianapolis Colts will be playing their playoff games. Over 500 school, youth league and all-star cheer teams from all over the country face-off in the JAMfest Nationals Championships Jan. 18 - 20 at the Indiana Convention Center & RCA Dome. The RCA Dome will also host the U.S. Hot Rod Monster Jam Jan. 26.
There is always a performance Downtown
From glorious sounds of the symphony to wonderful acting talents, there is no better way to spend the New Year than at one of many performances in Downtown. This month, see Mid-Life! The Crisis Musical at Theatre on the Square on Mass Ave Jan. 4 - 27. Also, Theatre on the Square will also be performing the witty Say You Love Satan Jan. 11 - Feb. 2. The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra Lilly Classical Series will host numerous concerts this month. The Doodlebops, a children's favorite, will visit the Murat Centre for two performances on Jan. 12. Also coming to the Murat Centre is Broadway in Indianapolis presents The Wedding Singer on stage Jan. 22 - 27. Visit the American Cabaret Theatre to catch the unique Menopause the Musical running Jan. 15 - March 30. The Indianapolis Repertory Theatre will perform Doubt by John Patrick Shanley Jan. 16 - Feb. 9. Watch your favorite television dancers, including two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Hélio Castroneves, when the Dancing with the Stars Tour stops at Conseco Fieldhouse on Jan. 18. Also at Conseco, Reba McEntire and Kelly Clarkson will take the stage on Feb. 8. Celebrate the late, great Frank Sinatra with the musical My Way performed by the Indianapolis Civic Theatre Jan. 25 & 26.
Cultural interests
Visit the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians & Western Art at various times during the month to explore the documentary Ride to Wounded Knee, an exhibit about the last armed conflict between the Dakota Sioux and the United States. Events include the film the Ride to Wounded Knee on Jan. 5, Lakota Woman: Siege at Wounded Knee on Jan. 12, Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra performs "Incident at Wounded Knee" Jan. 25 & 26 and many more. The Indianapolis Museum of Art opens a new exhibit Hats of Africa: From Asante to Zulu in January.
Looking ahead…
February is promising many exciting opportunities in Downtown. The Indiana Pacers have an abundance of home games throughout the month. Jesus Christ Superstar comes to the Murat Centre in Feb 5 - 7, as well as country artist Blake Shelton on Feb. 9.
